The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro family improve and iterate on the iPhone 12 camera. The new iPhones come with updated camera features in terms of both hardware and software. Computational photography is used to improve camera functions. With its new iPhone 13 models, Apple has added notable new camera features to get an edge in the smartphone photography market. The biggest updates are with video. Here's how Apple made iPhone's photos and videos better for the iPhone 13.

Both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini offer a dual rear camera setup. A redesigned rear camera layout with diagonally arranged lenses and a redesigned TrueDepth camera system is smaller while still packing in the same amazing technologies like Face ID. In doing all of this it still offers more display area. There are two 12MP cameras, one is the main 26mm wide-angle sensor and the other one is a 13mm ultrawide sensor. Computational photography is used to improve camera functions. Apple says the cameras of both the devices are capable of “gathering 47 percent more light for less noise and brighter results.” The smartphones also get the “Sensor-shift OIS” technology, which was essentially introduced in iPhone 12 Pro Max. The tech helps stabilize the sensor instead of the lens to offer more steady shots.

There are some of the features that are available on all the iPhone 13 models, including iPhone 13, mini, Pro and Pro Max. There is a Cinematic Mode, which Apple says uses rack focus to seamlessly shift the focus from one subject to another when capturing video.
Cinematic mode records videos of people, pets, and objects with a beautiful depth effect with automatic focus changes, so anyone can capture cinema-style moments. Image : Apple
A faster Neural Engine in A15 Bionic, new image signal processor (ISP), and advancements in computational photography power all-new features on iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Photographic Styles allows adjustable filters that can automatically boost or mute colours without affecting skin tone. The dual-camera system and power of computational photography support Smart HDR 4, which can help optimize the contrast, lighting, and even skin tones of users in a scene. The TrueDepth camera supports all the amazing new camera features, including Cinematic mode, Photographic Styles, Smart HDR 4, and more.
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max gets a few more Pro features

The iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max feature a triple rear camera setup. The pro camera system gets its biggest advancement ever with new Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto cameras, powered by the A15 Bionic. With new sensors and lenses for all three rear cameras, optimised to work seamlessly with iOS 15 and powered by the new image signal processor (ISP) in A15 Bionic for improved noise reduction and tone mapping.

Ultra wide camera: The ultrawide camera on the new iPhone 13 Pro model has the largest image sensor so far in an iPhone. It has an f/1.8 aperture, which is wider than iPhone 12 Pro’s f/2.4 aperture. Apple claims that this ultra-wide lens can capture up to 92 percent more light, which means that users should get a major improvement in quality. The new lens design, autofocus capability for the first time in the Ultra Wide on iPhone, and advanced software also unlock something never before possible on iPhone: macro photography. Users can capture sharp, stunning images where objects appear larger than life, magnifying subjects with a minimum focus distance of 2 centimeters. Macro also extends to video including Slo-mo and Time-lapse.

Wide camera: The ƒ/1.5 aperture Wide camera, which is also a bit wider than last year’s f/1.6 aperture, on iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max offers a massive improvement in low-light situations, up to 2.2x when compared to iPhone 12 Pro, and nearly 1.5x when compared to iPhone 12 Pro Max. The all-new Wide camera has a larger sensor with 1.9 µm pixels which is the largest ever on an iPhone. Sensor-shift optical image stabilisation (OIS) is available on both models.

Telephoto camera: The telephoto sensor now has a smaller f/2.8 aperture and it has a 77mm lens with 3x zoom factor, up from 2x on the iPhone 12 Pro and 2.5x on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro models now also support 6x optical zoom range and 15x digital zoom.
A video feature, but this isn't coming until later, is ProRes. This is a commonly used professional-level video format that offers greater color accuracy, less compression, and retains more metadata from the original recording, letting editors make more drastic changes in post-production. Once it launches, it will be available on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
